Patton McDowell MBA, CFREPresident
Patton McDowell is one of the preeminent nonprofit consultants in the Carolinas, having enjoyed a successful 25-year career in leadership and management, fundraising, public speaking, strategic planning, and organizational development. His consulting practice has allowed him to work with a diverse set of organizations – now more than 150 – across various sectors including healthcare, education, arts and culture, youth and family services, and membership associations. Patton is an accomplished speaker who has facilitated and led workshops throughout the region for numerous organizations as well as served as a presenter at state and national conferences.
He founded PMA Consulting, LLC in 2009. Previously, Patton served five years as Vice President for University Advancement at Queens University where he managed a team of 25 professionals and was responsible for leading, planning and implementing all fundraising, communication and alumni programs for the university, including work that was instrumental in leading the year- long celebration of Queens’ 150th sesquicentennial. He led fundraising initiatives that generated over $40 million during his tenure, which included two of the three highest fundraising years in the school’s history. Patton also led Queens’ marketing efforts and its local, state and federal government relation’s initiatives.
Prior to his tenure at Queens, he served four years as Vice Chancellor for University Advancement at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he was the youngest vice chancellor in the 16-campus UNC system. At UNCW, Patton managed a team of 20, and completed the university’s first capital campaign of $25 million in 1998, among other milestone achievements. He previously served as Program Director for Special Olympics North Carolina in Raleigh for seven years, following two years with Special Olympics International in Washington D.C. His work in Special Olympics included the creation of a unique volunteer training system called sport development teams, still in use today nationwide. Patton also conducted coach and volunteer workshops throughout North Carolina, Canada, New Zealand and the Caribbean.
Patton is a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and received a BA in English Education from UNC Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead Scholar. He also completed the executive MBA program at the McColl School of Business at Queens. He is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) and a Master Trainer for AFP International.
