It’s a New Year! Have You Thought About Your Strategic Plan?
PMA often finds the beginning of a new year is a natural time for our nonprofit partners to determine, organize, and document their plans and goals for the future. A structured, thoughtful strategic planning process brings together various stakeholders to help an organization clarify who they are, where they are headed, and how to get there.
When is the right time for a new Strategic Plan? See below for three common opportunities.
You lack a unified mission or vision – an effective strategic plan integrates the voices of many stakeholders – staff, board members, volunteers, funders, and other community partners – to develop a shared vision and roadmap for the future. This ensures that the plan has the buy-in of those whose backing will be needed for success.
You are having difficulty moving forward – a key piece of strategic planning is determining prioritized action steps and metrics that support ongoing implementation and assessment. This will allow for forward motion, accountability, and a sense of accomplishment.
You are facing a major change within your organization, market, or community – new leadership, a changing economy, increasing competition, or structural shifts often present a logical time to assess operations and realign priorities to ensure you are able to focus on fulfilling mission.
